Our Woods
Not only do we insist on using beautiful types of wood but we focus in on the highest quality pieces when we set out to make furniture. With many types to choose from we’re pleased to offer choices in different woods for your piece. There is also the option to mix wood varieties. Our standard wood is flat-sawn American black cherry. Premium quarter-sawn cherry is also available. Oak, maple, ash and walnut are all North American hardwoods available flat-sawn, quarter-sawn. We can also utilize more exotic materials such as Honduran Mahogany. Mixing varieties is an idea to keep in mind, particularly in utilizing highly figured woods such as birdseye or tiger maple for accents. Typical choices for accents are drawer faces, door panels, tabletops or skirts. While Furniture by Dovetail builds in a variety of major hardwoods such as Maple, Walnut, Mahogany, Oak, and Ash, Dovetail is particularly passionate about American Black Cherry. Our cherry comes from the wilds of the Allegheny plateau of Pennsylvania and West Virginia where many lumber companies have established managed, sustainable-growth forests. Cherry has an active grain and develops a rich, russet patina over time. This process of change in color is celebrated like the aging of a fine wine, within which your piece will develop a richness and complexity of color and grain that is, in our opinion, unrivalled.
